Our sailing staycation: yacht charter after lockdown

Rob Peake enjoys getting afloat again after lockdown, with a day charter from the Hamble, on the cleanest yacht known to mankind…

Perhaps against the expectations of some, the safest holiday you can undertake in the world today is on a yacht. Yes, you still have to contend with the normal perils of life afloat – your G&T may spill as another boat’s wake sends ripples across your anchorage, and you might have to tweak the jib sheet more than once as you pootle round that nearby headland. Who knows, you might even have to reapply some Factor 50 after an afternoon swim off the bathing platform. Of course, in post-Covid world, what you really want to know is that the yacht you will find on your handover day will be clean enough to operate on. I don’t get halfway through this question, when we turn up at Universal Yachting on the Hamble, for our day charter of a Dufour 412, before fleet manager Steve reassures me.

Steve has in fact spent most of the last year scrubbing hard in between charters and covering not only Universal Yachting’s fleet of Dufours but also himself in the necessary anti-viral mist.

On board, all knives and forks are in sanitised plastic bags and similar measures have been taken for other implements. Any pandemic-induced neuroses can be dispelled. This is probably the cleanest, freshest boat we have ever been on.

Our children, aged 7 and 10, disappear down below to explore the three cavernous cabins and a multitude of lockers, while Steve gives my wife Kathy and I the handover chat. We’re only out for a day, so he doesn’t give us the long version reserved for week charters – and we pay close attention because our own sailing together has been on a 1980s Moody, not a modern Dufour that comes bristling with the latest systems. Steve has been kind enough to switch on and set up everything that we’ll need for the day, from batteries to plotter. We take note of the basics – VHF, emergency kit and heads procedure.

And then there is nothing for us to do other than to work out how to get this good-as-new, quarter of a million-pound yacht that belongs to someone else out of the marina without an embarrassing mishap.

Both Steve and company boss Chris has given excellent advice on coming in and out of Mercury Yacht Harbour, but the Dufour is a typically massive modern yacht and we know its high side decks will cause more than a bit of windage.

We give the bowthruster a few trial squirts, leave go the lines and motor on out. We have with us Kathy’s mum, Sue Heaser, who is here partly as a thankyou for having had the kids to stay for the past week, but mostly because she’s a far better sailor than either of us.

Sue has the helm and steers the boat out into the river easily. No mishaps, the sun is shining and we’re in the Hamble, which for sailors new to the area is an attraction itself. Sue and Kathy, both lifelong east coasters, enjoy watching ‘the cradle of yachting’ slide past to port and starboard. Jolie Brise is a highlight, neatly moored up as we motor downstream.

It’s a glorious Friday and the Solent is empty. With the help of 10-year-old Miles, who is self-appointed chart-plotter, and seven-year-old Amity on the wheel, we take an easy route towards Osbourne Bay. The twin wheel set up on the Dufour means an adult can steer on one side, while a youngster gets the hang of it on the other. The deck and cockpit space are huge and really this boat, with eight good berths down below, could take two or three families easily. We spread ourselves out luxuriously and settle down for a rare day afloat. It’s been a while, mainly due to parenthood rather than lockdown, since mum and dad have sailed together. In the old days, pre-kids, we found it worked best with Kathy as skipper, while I did nav, ropes and tea. We settle into the old routine and all works fine.

There is, of course, the inevitable rustiness that comes after a long period ashore – and in 2021 after almost an entire year ashore – but luckily granny Sue has been enjoying some more regular sailing on Arthur Ransome’s Nancy Blackett on the River Deben.

Universal Yachting are keen to attract people who are newer to sailing and may want a skipper. No problem – they can provide. Their ‘Pop Up’ days are designed to get new sailors afloat, particularly as the pandemic persuades many people that sailing is a good option if they can’t fly to the Algarve. Unsurprisingly, Universal Yachting are already getting booked up for the summer ahead.

Nobody needs explaining how perfectly well-suited UK chartering is to the idea of bubbles, social distancing and not being able to fly. And us Brits are blessed, of course, with some of the finest coastline in the world. Not all of it, admittedly, lies in the Solent, but as we near the Isle of Wight things get decidedly more scenic.

We potter round below Norris Castle and into Osbourne Bay, to join a handful of other yachts anchoring there for lunch.Universal Yachting’s charter party the day before had apparently tacked all the way up the Beaulieu and explored their way up the Medina too, before arriving back at base after nine hours underway. That’s getting your money’s worth. It’s true that the Solent is ripe for exploring, with plenty of places off the beaten track, and plenty on it. We have a more leisurely time in mind. After sandwiches and coffee, we raise the anchor on the electric windlass and slowly get underway again. We pootle past Cowes and take a right turn after the Brambles cardinal, heading home while enjoying more Solent sights.

Not an ambitious trip by anyone’s standards, and all the better for it! The two children have loved their first day on a ‘megaboat’ and mum and dad have got the wind in their hair again after almost a year without getting afloat.

Chartering for the First Time? Read About us in All at Sea!

We’re in the April 2021 issue of All at Sea!

Chris Warwick, principal at Universal Yachting, on making your first charter – home or abroad – a success.

Thinking of a holiday this year – one to get you away from the crowds? Hiring a yacht, known as a charter, could be just the answer. If it is not something you have done before, as with any holiday, getting the balance right and keeping your whole group happy is important.

Talk it through

Whether you are a group of friends or a family, work out in advance what everyone wants from the experience. An element of compromise will always be essential and, if it is a family holiday, consider which items are negotiable with the younger members – democracy can have a cost!

This choice will, in part, depend on your level of experience and what you wish to do.

  • Skippered charter: Similar to hiring a ski guide, skippered charters can be your golden ticket to some of the best and off-the-beaten-track areas. Options range from booking a cabin onboard and mixing in with others, similar to a room in a ski chalet, to booking a luxury yacht with a skipper/crew, relieving you of all sailing and even catering responsibilities. Get involved or just sit back and relax.
  • Flotilla sailing: Sailing as part of a group with other yachts all heading to the same destinations, supervised by a lead boat, has appeal for experienced sailors as much as people wanting to try something new. Flotilla holidays have moved on from ‘follow-the-leader’ type of sailing and organised’ socials, allowing much greater freedom to do your own thing. The opportunity to mix with other families and make new friends can be important with, say, teenage children. The technical support and area familiarisation provided by the lead boat can be very handy in peak season, especially when trying to find berths and restaurants. Originally something that started in the Mediterranean, there are now some UK flotilla breaks.
  • ‘Bareboat’ charters: Similar to hiring a campervan, you are provided with a fully equipped boat to use as your own and sail where you please, normally within a pre-defined sailing area and proof of sailing ability. Alternatively, you can create your own ‘mini-flotilla’ with a group of friends with a couple of bareboat charters. There is nothing better than the freedom of sailing on your own’ yacht during the day and then meeting up with friends in the evening.

Sailing Area

Whilst chartering is popular in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, do not forget the UK offers great sailing options, especially in these current times. You can take a quick weekend break or spend a week exploring the coastline, enjoying everything it has to offer, all on your doorstep.

Every sailing area will suit different groups, so decide whether you prefer:

  • Complete independence;
  • Avoiding the hustle and bustle of harbours and towns;
  • Eating on board in a remote bay vs lively harbourside restaurants;
  • Short or long day sailing;
  • Days off sailing to explore some of the local sights.

Weather considerations

Whilst no one can predict the weather, especially these days, every charter company will highlight which are low and high wind destinations. No wind can be as frustrating as too much, so always work around the person with the least sailing experience.

An experienced yacht will shrug off no wind and still have a good day, yet someone new to sailing could get put off by high winds. Be prepared to adapt, after all you would not expect a new skier to do a black run!

The right yacht

Budget will play its part, as will experience and the number of people in your group, with your choice of boat. Most yachts will normally sleep eight people, although some newer yachts above 45ft may boast additional cabins with a capacity for 10-12 people. Be wary of cramming more in to get the price per person down. Do not let the reality spoil your holiday and consider:

  • who sleeps where?
  • will your 6ft teenager fit into the single bunk bed?
  • who gets the master cabin if you are splitting costs equally?

Whilst you plan to spend most time outside, space can be important, especially off-season or where there are no weather guarantees. As a general rule, if a boat sleeps eight then six onboard will be comfortable.

Although older yachts are often cheaper, it does not have to mean that they are tired and worn out. However, build age into your expectations, especially if chartering privately online. Do not rely on ‘brochure shots’, and if booking with a larger charter company by phone, remember they may never have seen the actual yacht.

For most people, sailing is the easy part. However, anchoring a large yacht in an open bay is different to trying to manoeuvre in a crowded marina or harbour. Whilst it is tempting to go for the biggest yacht you can find, be realistic about your abilities. Why put yourself under unnecessary pressure?

The right company

You may prefer smaller, family-run companies with a more personal service, or a wider choice offered by larger companies. Either way, be clear about booking conditions and cancellation terms, especially in current times.

Travel, flights and transfers

Overseas travel can eat time out of your hard-earned holiday, as well as adding hassle or cost if flights are not part of the package. A holiday you can reach by car may be preferable.

Time of year

Sailing out of season has great appeal, often being quieter and lower cost. There is a risk the weather may be less reliable, so assess whether you are prepared to tolerate some cloud, rain or even storms.

Prior experience?

Getting some refresher training before your trip may make a big difference to your break, especially if you are a little rusty or taking inexperienced sailors with you.

If you are completely new to chartering, book a day with a skipper locally to see if everyone is going to enjoy your holiday idea before you commit to the booking.

Always check with your charter company what sailing qualifications and certificates are required before you go. Most countries in Europe, for example, require you to have the International Certificate of Competence as a minimum.

Best boat award 2021, The winner is dufour 530

“After SAIL’s editors spent months sailing, studying, evaluating and discussing the latest the boat-building industry had to offer, SAIL Magazine announced the eight winners of its 2021 Best Boats Awards in its January/February issue.

“Given the pandemic and lack of boat shows, we weren’t entirely sure we were going to be able to pull it off,” said SAIL Principal Editor, Adam Cort. “But in the end our 2021 Best Boats contest far exceeded any of our expectations, both in terms of the number of boats we were able to sail and the boats themselves. A special thanks and congratulations not only to our winners, but the boat-building industry as a whole for doing such a great job in these trying times.”

This year’s team of Best Boats judges included SAIL’s Adam Cort, charter editor Zuzana Prochazka, veteran boat-reviewer Tom Dove and SAIL’s contributing editor Tom Hale . ”

The Dufour 530 has won the Best Boat Award in the category of ‘Best Large Monohull 50ft and above’.

The stunning new yacht has been designed with optimal versatility to cater for all clients’ sailing requirements. Available in three models, the Dufour 530 has been celebrated for her ease of handling for cruising through to her ultimate performance in offshore and racing conditions.

The “Easy” model features minimal sail controls that are ideal for charter, an “Ocean” version has upgraded sail controls for more serious cruisers and passage makers, and a “Performance” model designed for racers featuring a larger sail area, performance orientated sail controls and a deeper bulb keel.

Developed on the architectural premise of the shipyard’s Performance range, its authentic racer hull has been designed with exhilaration in mind. Comfort is key when cruising so Dufour has combined the main Grand Large features with an open, secure, fully equipped deck.

The Dufour 530 will hold particular appeal for Asia Pacific sailors with its innovative new outdoor galley located aft between the twin wheels that creates a spacious area for alfresco entertaining. It can be topped by a cushion for relaxing, and there is also another pair of sunpads for catching the rays on the foredeck.

The Felci-designed Dufour 530 has optimised customisation with five available layouts offering three to six cabins, two to four heads, an option for an outdoor galley, two keel depths and a choice of rigs.

Following a test sail of the yacht, the judges reported, “The Dufour 530 not only made the most of the 20+ knot conditions but felt downright regal, revelling in the chop like a kind of waterborne Cadillac.”

The Yacht Sales Co is the exclusive Australian dealer of Dufour Yachts and is driven by a dedicated team of highly experienced sales professionals in centres across the company’s regional network.

Interest in Dufour Yachts has surged since the brand was taken over by the Fountaine-Pajot Group with an impressive strategic plan implemented to re-establish Dufour as a market leader.

The Yacht Sales Co sales manager Bob Vinks said there has been a huge increase in enquiries from Asia Pacific buyers, particularly surrounding the new Dufour 470 that is due to arrive in Australia in April 2021.

The Dufour 470 will celebrate its Australian launch at the 2021 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, and the yacht is set to become an iconic model with its combination of stunning design and high performance.

Available in three versions to cater for private owners, charter operators and performance racing enthusiasts, the Dufour 470 delivers exhilarating performance, classic styling and luxury in an exciting new way.

Yacht Charter in The Solent - Your UK Staycation 2021

We have every reason to be optimistic as we head into 2021. And now is the time to contemplate and plan how you will spend your leisure time this year. More and more people are looking for alternative things to do and there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water and enjoy your free time safely.

In 2020 there was huge interest in sailing holidays with people wishing to explore the Solent and South Coast and whilst, inevitably. The effects of Covid will remain with us for some time, the experiences of 2020 mean everyone is far better prepared for this year. Every business has learnt how to operate safely within the guidelines and as the situation changes we know how to react and adapt.

If you want to take a holiday on the water, here’s how our experiences of 2020 can help you make the most of your 2021.

Chartering a yacht – how to start

Bareboat chartering is quite simply a term for boat hire, not dissimilar to hiring a car, and a ‘bare-boat’ simply means you are in charge! We will ask you to show evidence of your sailing experience, and any sailing qualifications you may hold.

Qualifications Required for Bareboat Yacht Charter

If the idea of a holiday afloat appeals, yet you are new to chartering or don’t have much sailing experience, there are two ways to get started.

Take a skippered charter for a day or two – this involves hiring a yacht with a qualified skipper to experience what’s involved and get the feel of whether sailing will suit you and the family.

or

Learn as a family – under the current regulations (and when not in lockdown), as a family you can start sailing with a qualified instructor on board and work through the RYA competent crew and day skipper courses. Learning as a family builds everyone’s confidence and with some practice and a good sea school. You’ll be able to progress to taking a boat out without the instructor.

Get ahead of the demand

When restrictions were lifted in July 2020 everyone rushed to book their UK staycation and many companies experienced a huge increase in demand for their boats. As this left some disappointed our advice is to book up early rather than waiting until the last minute.

With the on-going pandemic effects, we expect to see more people continuing to holiday in the UK. So 2021 looks set to be even busier than 2020.

We offer Flexible Booking Conditions and in the event of any Covid related issues, we will move your booking to another date, if necessary.

Size of yacht

Decide which is the most suitable yacht for your sailing plans. UK chartering is different from locations like the Mediterranean, where typically people try and hire the biggest yacht they can afford. Manoeuvring a large yacht in a tightly packed marina with a strong current is somewhat different, so consider what you feel most comfortable with.

Your itinerary

Of course, the UK cannot offer the same sunny weather guarantees of the Mediterranean. Although we generally have better sailing winds. However, with a little planning and imagination, you can be ready for every eventuality and have a fantastic time too.

Consider our Top 10 UK Charter Tips:
  • Assess your crew’s capabilities and confidence as well as your own.
  • How many hours sailing a day do you / your crew want to do.
  • Understand your crew’s holiday ambitions and be prepared to compromise.
  • Avoid pushing yourselves too far this is a holiday and you all want to relax and have fun.
  • Build-in flexibility in your plan for the weather – take games, books, podcasts & films for downtime.
  • Enjoy some quiet moments – there are some delightful anchorages.
  • For different experience and an adventure take a few nights at anchor away from the familiar marinas.
  • Mix things up for the family and have some shore-based days – walk, hire bikes or simply swim and have a beach day.
  • Bring a paddleboard with you or hire one from your charter company.
  • Spend time to explore each destination and visit some of the amazing local sites.
Solent staycation ..

It was interesting hearing how many people felt they had re-discovered the Solent and were reminded of how much it has to offer.
There is plenty of fun to be had sailing around the Solent whether visiting historic attractions, exploring the natural harbours or just taking in the views. For an extended adventure, head down to the Jurassic Coast and the West Country, nip across to France or explore the Channel Islands (regulations permitting!).

Remember not to put yourself under too much time pressure. Not everyone may want to be sailing daily and avoid over-stretching yourself and then pushing hard to return to the charter base on time.

Take advice…

If you are unfamiliar with the area, ask us and we will guide you through what is realistic, the best spots to visit and options you may not have considered. The more advice you can get during your preparations will undoubtedly result in everyone having a better time.

Book your berths…

One of the key learnings from this pandemic year is that many Solent marinas may have visitor berth limits. Plan ahead and don’t leave booking marinas until the last minute, as it will get busy, especially in the summer.

How prepared are you?

In 2020 we booked charters with many people who ordinarily sail in the Med, whether on a flotilla or bareboat. Whilst no one had any significant difficulties, for some sailing in UK waters certainly came as a surprise.

If tidal sailing is unfamiliar to you, or you want to refresh some skills. It’s worth considering some form of course before your main holiday. Whether it’s an RYA course or bespoke coaching, with your family or on your own. If you want to get the most out of your main summer holiday then a few days training in advance is a great start.
